Ibridazione 0 - Free-Dom
Lubiana (SLO), 1995. Performance, durata 40 minuti.

Lubjana (Slo) 1995 Performance – 40 minutes

The action takes place in an ex-military prison in Ljubljana, or to be more precise in a prison cell on the first floor. The initial visit to the prison generated the whole project. The place readily provokes a contemplation of its identity, past and present. Once a prison and a symbol of denied liberty, it is now a place of culture and exchange, open to liberal expression. Of equal importance is the contemplation of the meaning and the value of the word Freedom, as confirmed by the title which originated in the transformation of the word Freedom into Free Dom (free house). The audience, at first gathered in the corridor, is invited to enter the cell and the communication rendered in Italian, is simultaneously translated. The door, made of metal bars, is locked as soon as the people have filled the room. Part of those present are forced to stay in the corridor seeing that the capacity of the cell does not allow further access. The cell can only be opened from the outside. The public is informed that the performance will end as soon as someone expresses the wish to leave the cell. I start by speaking of freedom: while it remains a rethorical verbal signal it is inconsistent. Freedom means behaviour, reacting to others as to one’s own body, with the same attention and with the same care. The physical environment is cramped, the distance between each individual being at a minimum. Shoulder to shoulder, people develop physical/emotive respect for their own presence as well as for that of the others. Only in such a way is the tight closeness, in the co-existence with other participants, projected in time: the action is reciprocal as is the perception, because everyone is constructing the event, participating in and watching the event. For a moment the individual mutates, becoming one. After another forty minutes in the cell the lack of space starts to take its toll and, as a few participants point out, the back of the room is short of air. Someone asks to leave and the, as agreed, the cell door opens.
